Senior Program Officer, Advocacy and Accountability at Women Enabled International

Alana (she/her) is the Senior Program Officer for Advocacy & Accountability at Women Enabled International (WEI). Alana brings to this role over seven years of experience in human rights law from a gender and disability intersectional perspective. Since joining Women Enabled International in 2020, Alana has worked in the design, planning, and implementation of projects such as COVID-19, a disability- and gender-inclusive global response to the pandemic; the coordination of the global network Inclusive Generation Equality Collective, leading the development of their Feminist Accessibility Protocol, a set of commitments to ensure accessibility and inclusion in gender equality spaces; and the coordination of the current research on the right to legal capacity and its impact on SRHR in countries in Africa, America, Europe and the Pacific.

Alana also brings to the role her advocacy experience at the United Nations level, using research, partnership, and movement-building strategies to advance WEI’s advocacy among United Nations mechanisms that impact the lives of those at the intersection of gender and disability. In addition, Alana is WEI’s interns’ supervisor, guiding the next generation of human rights lawyers in their learning process and their contributions to WEI’s core mission.

Prior to joining WEI, she worked at non-profit organizations, the Judiciary, and universities in Spain and Brazil. Her previous roles as the Legal Advisor of a national organization of people with intellectual disabilities, as the Coordinator of a Disability Legal Clinic, and as a UNCRPD intern shaped her expertise in issues such as sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender-based violence, legal capacity, access to justice, inclusive education and the U.N. Human Rights system.

Originally from Brazil, Alana holds a law degree from the University of Brasilia (Brazil) and a master’s degree in Human Rights from the University Carlos III (Spain). Alana speaks English, Portuguese, and Spanish fluently.
