Temporary U.N. Advocacy Consultant – Parental Leave Cover

Women Enabled International (WEI) is now accepting applications for a U.N. Advocacy Consultant to provide parental leave coverage for WEI’s U.N. Advocacy Director from May 1, 2019 to mid-December 2019. This is a part-time, temporary consulting position for 20 to 30 hours per week. Duties will include:

• Implement legal advocacy strategies to strengthen international standards on the rights of women and girls with disabilities.
• Research, draft, and edit/review submissions and other advocacy materials aimed at U.N. human rights and political bodies and agencies to inform discussions affecting the rights of women and girls with disabilities.
• Provide training to civil society organizations on advocacy before U.N. human rights mechanisms.
• Monitor relevant developments in international human rights law.
• Represent Women Enabled International at relevant meetings, briefings, convenings, and conferences.
• Supervise legal interns and legal fellows.

Qualifications:

• Law degree preferred. Other advanced degree in a related field will be considered.
• At least four years of international human rights research and/or advocacy experience, including experience researching and drafting written submissions to U.N. human rights bodies, familiarity with working methods of relevant U.N. human rights and political bodies, and experience advocating with those bodies.
• Expertise in women’s rights and/or disability rights is required.
• Outstanding writing and research skills.
• Capable of complex human rights analysis.
• Ability to work well with others in a team and supervise and mentor junior staff.
• ability to work independently to execute tasks described above, when needed.
• Demonstrated commitment to women’s rights and/or disability rights.
• Fluency in English is required. Fluency with other U.N. languages is a plus.

Location:
WEI is located in Washington, D.C. and in New York City. Consultant could be based in another location but must be willing and able to travel to New York or Washington, D.C. as needed.

Compensation:  
Commensurate with experience.
